Description
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that we get through our diet and is a hormone our bodies make. Our body can produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight.
The role of Vitamin D:
- Bone health: helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, necessary for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth1.
- Cardiovascular and metabolic disease: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to cardiovascular and metabolic disease, and therefore supplemental vitamin D has been used in the treatment and prevention of these diseases2.
- Immune system: plays a role in regulating the immune system and helping it fight off infections and diseases3.
- Mood and depression: studies suggest a link between vitamin D deficiency and mood disorders like depression4.
- Muscle function: vitamin D3 is involved in muscle strength and function.
- Weight management: some studies suggest that vitamin D may play a role in weight loss by influencing appetite and metabolism, however, more research is needed.
Vitamin D Receptor (VDR):
The VDR is found in most cells, not just those involved with bone and mineral homeostasis (i.e., bone, gut, kidney) resulting in widespread actions of 1.25-hydroxyvitamin D on most physiologic and pathologic processes5.
